The RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship powered by Dick's Sporting Goods evolved out of the National Long Drive Championship, which began in 1975. It has grown from a mostly low-key event to one that includes golfers from virtually every corner of the world. Competitors come from more than 125 counties, and vie for a purse worth over $450,000. The RE/MAX World Finals are tape-delayed to air each year during the Christmas season on ESPN and ESPN2, and have become a holiday tradition.

2009 marked the fifteenth year that RE/MAX has sponsored the event. In the early years, drives of 325 yards gave hitters a chance at finishing “in the money." Today—hitters typically need to drive the ball at least 350 to 360 yards to advance to the qualifying rounds.

Each year an excess of 10,000 competitors attempt to qualify for the RE/MAX Finals. These qualification events occur at approximately 300+ sites around the globe.

LDA competitors are sultans of swing speed and monsters of mash, who routinely produce drives with astounding carry and roll. Such imposing figures as Jason Zuback, Sean "The Beast" Fister and reigning RE/MAX world champion Jamie Sadlowski dot the LDA landscape.

In it's fourth year, the Military Long Drive Championship presented by 7UP seeks to find the longest US military golfer on the planet. The Military LDC is open to all branches of Active Duty and their family members 18 years and older, Reserve, National Guard, and Retirees. In 2009, there were twenty local qualifying sites from California to Korea. The winner of this event claims the title and $10,000 cash.

In 2008, the City of Mesquite celebrated the grand opening of the new home of long drive, the Mesquite Sports and Event Complex.

The RE/MAX of Texas Shootout in Dallas has become a staple on the LDA's summer schedule. Also, the Texas 2-Ball team event introduced in 2008 proved to be a successful member-only competition.
