LDA: Did you have a viewing party on Aug. 28? Dalen: No everyone was busy, so we had somewhat of a viewing party on August 29th. LDA: Where and with whom? Dalen: It was just at my house, some dinner and the show with my sister and my girlfriend Shannon. LDA: What did you think? Dalen: Pretty good, I really liked it, I just wish it was longer. LDA: Any surprises during telecast? Dalen: I thought they would do a little more on me since I won, it seemed like they tried to keep it a secret who won by not showing too much of one person. That is what everyone else has told me too, they would have liked to have seen a bigger piece or another piece on me. LDA: Anything you'd forgotten about the event that he noticed during telecast? Dalen: Pretty much everything I said that the sneaky cameras heard, I don't remember saying about 90% of the things they showed on the telecast. LDA: What did you do with $100K? Dalen: Nothing yet, I am waiting to pay taxes on it, then start to spend it, but probably a nice long trip somewhere fun, and a down payment on a house, nothing too crazy. LDA: What are your plans now? Dalen: Well I am going to play in a couple pro-am tournaments and maybe a couple mini tour events and just try to get my foot in the door. I really want to play golf for a living, whether it be on the tour or on the LDA. LDA: What would you tell others about the EDC? Dalen: Just that it is a once in a lifetime chance to be on stage, it was the greatest experience of my life, and I wish I could go back next year and defend. It is an event that I would love to do every year, but that's what makes it special is it is only for amateurs. LDA: Does "everyone" have a chance? Dalen: Everyone really does have a chance, I didn't even make the cut last year, then I won it this year. There was long hitters, short hitters, young men, old men, good swings, and bad swings. You just have to put together a great week. LDA: What's more important, distance or accuracy? Dalen: Well at the beginning I would have told you accuracy, but in the later rounds I think the distance really became a key factor. I felt like I was the longest hitter in the final 8, and I just had to match whatever my opponent did, so if he got 3 in then I had to get only 3 in and I knew they would be for more points. Its just truly a test of distance and accuracy, but in this competition I would take the distance. LDA: At what percentage were you swinging? Dalen: I was swinging at about 90%, I usually hit a draw, but I was trying to take a little more controlled cut type swing, thats why in the finals I have kind of a weird look on my face when I hit the first ball OB to the left, it was the first ball I hooked to the left of the grid all week. LDA: Is it easy to start steering? Dalen: I don't think so, even in situations where I just needed to get one ball in the grid somewhere, I still just used the same swing, same tempo, and same speed that I had used all week. LDA: Did your confidence ever waver? Dalen: No not really, after having a horrible first two rounds, and moving into the losers bracket, I just took every round as if it were my last round, and didn't look ahead or behind. LDA: What was going through your mind in the final match when your fourth ball left the club face? Dalen: I was just thinking wow did that grounder really just go 280. Then quickly thought about if I should just guide one down the middle or just hit my regular drive, since I only needed 4 points or something like that. LDA: How about the fifth? Dalen: I knew right away that I had hit it well, and it was going to be in the grid. Everyone was saying they couldn't believe that I did a fist pump right away when it was so close to the OB line, but as a golfer you just know when you have hit a good shot. I just really tried to stay in the moment of the shot, and not think that this shot is for $100,000, and at the same time didn't think if I miss this shot I get nothing. I just really cleared my mind and envisioned the 18th hole at my home course, and hit the shot right down the fairway. LDA: Any shout outs you would like to make? Dalen: I really want to thank my sister Dawnee and my girlfriend Shannon for being there with me and going through what they had to go through. My family for supporting me, especially my dad who has always believed I could do something great like this. And all my friends and family that watched the scores post live on the computer, and then watched the telecast. I know a lot of people were very excited to watch. It is really humbling to have such a special moment in my life, and so many people can be happy for me, and be proud of me. |
